Find an EMR and PM that will fit how your practice operates.  Most of the solutions on the market are rigid, forcing the practice to change how it functions to fit the software.  Most can be changed but it comes at fairly high cost for custom programing.

Make sure the EMR and PM can communicate seamlessly.  You don’t want to waste time and money working with patches or intermediary software links that move data back and forth between your EMR and PM solutions.

Be sure the software is ONC-ATCB compliant and has been certified by the Certification Commission for Health Information Technology (CCHIT®).  Meeting the latest certification criteria of CCHIY means you will be able to share documents and patient information in accordance with the law.

Find a company that knows your business not just the software.  Organizing and preparation for implementing an EMR is the most important part of the program and working with people who know how practices operate will make implementation far easier and faster.
